Observe before you intervene
A first design habit: watch water, wind, access, shade, soil cover, and existing life before making permanent changes.
Why it matters
Most avoidable mistakes come from acting before the landscape has been read. Observation reduces wasted labour and helps each change support the wider system.
What to look for
Note water movement, wet spots, dry ridges, wind channels, frost pockets, existing paths, animal movement, shade, and where maintenance will actually happen.
Practical exercise
Take photos from the same positions once a month. Keep the publish date truthful and treat older photographs as field evidence, not manufactured history.
