No-dig first bed

A beginner-friendly way to start growing while protecting soil structure and keeping the first intervention manageable.

Goal

Create one manageable bed that protects soil life, suppresses competing growth, and gives you a place to learn before scaling up.

Basic method

Mark a sensible bed width, cover existing growth with cardboard where appropriate, add compost or organic matter, and mulch paths so access does not compact the bed.

Wales note

In wet ground, access matters as much as fertility. Avoid building beds where every visit forces you to tread on soft soil.
